Couple of months back we asked our readers and Facebook fans about their favourite beach in Hong Kong. Since it’s a good time for going to the beach again, we thought we will share the results with everyone. Here is a list of top 5 beaches in Hong Kong, as per our readers. It is possible your beach didn’t make the cut, but you can always let us know your favourite in the comments section below.
5. Turtle Cove Beach.
Where: Tai Tam Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong.
Facilities: BBQ pits, Shower / Toilets, Changing Room. No food/drinks kiosks.
Pro’s: BBQ time with family or friends. Small beach makes me feel more secluded.
Con’s: Hard to find. Around 300 steps below the road, which means 300 steps to go up to the road.
How to get there: Get To Sai Wan Ho MTR Station and take bus no 14 from Exit A. Get out at Red Hill Estate bus stop.
4. Shek O Beach
Where: Shek O Road, Shek O.
Facilities: BBQ pits, Shower / Toilets, Changing Room, Small café’s and shacks, Obstacle Golf Course.
Pro’s: Good for rock climbing and sometimes surfing as well. Good for relaxing on the sand.
Con’s: Semi-long bus ride from MTR (35-45 mins) kills the mood a little. Can get crowded.
How to get there: Get to Shau Kei Wan MTR station. Take exit A3 and get to Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus. Take bus 9 and get off at the last stop.
3. Half Moon Bay (Hap Mun Bay)
Where: Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau), Sai Kung.
Facilities: BBQ pits, Shower / Toilets, Changing Room, Small snacks and drinks kiosk.
Pro’s: Picturesque trip to the beach. Good water quality. Sai Kung.
Con’s: Boat owners tend to haggle over price and do not understand English very well.
How to get there: Get to Sai Kung and take a boat (sampan) to Half Moon Bay.
2. Tai Long Wan Beach (Big Wave Bay) – Sai Kung.
Where: Sai Kung. (Not to be confused with Shek O one).
Facilities: Not many, expect for few good restaurants 2-3 minutes walk away.
Pro’s: White sand. Clear waters. Very secluded. Good for treks and camping. Surfers delight.
Con’s: Hard to get to (90 min trek). No Facilities. Big waves. Sharks spotted (though they have shark nets).
How to get there: Get to Sai Kung and take a boat to Tai Long Wai.
Get to Sai Kung, take bus 94 from Sai Kung Bus Terminus. Get off at Pak Tam Au and hike till Tai Wan Beach (90 mins). Or get off at Wong Shek Ferry Pier and either hire a speed boat to Ham Tin Beach (next to Tai Long Wan Beach), or from the pier take a ferry to Chek Keng Village and trek for about an hour to Ham Tin Beach.
1. Repulse Bay Beach
Where: Beach Road, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong Island
Facilities: Shower / Toilets, Changing Room, Restaurants nearby, Beach Volleyball court.
Pro’s: Easily accessible. Great food around. Good sunset views. Good places to visit nearby (temples & malls).
Con’s: Can get very crowded. Does not count as ‘getting away’!
How to get there: Take bus 260, 6, 6A or 6X from Central Exchange Square or bus 973, 973X from Tsim Sha Tsui East Bus Station. Take a cab.
