Now Showing in HK – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – A Fun Movie

By on June 1, 2013

No movie has generated greater excitement in recent times than Ayan Mukherjee’s (director of ‘Wake up Sid’) ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, starring ex-lovers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has four friends at the center of the story (Bunny aka Ranbir Kapoor, Naina aka Deepika Padukone, Aditi aka Kalki Koechlin and Avi aka Aditya Roy Kapur).

Bunny, Aditi and Avi are fast-friends since school while Naina was the class scholar – a geeky, bespectacled and shy girl who envies the fun and close bonds that the trio shares. Tired of cramming for her medical boards all the time, the otherwise-studious Naina decides to rebel and joins her friends for a trekking trip in Manali and the story starts….

Bunny, Aditi and Avi soon include the ‘chashmish’ in their gang as they fight, flirt and have fun on the pristine, white slopes of the picturesque hill station. Bunny helps Naina overcome her shyness and inhibitions and learn to live in the moment. It does not come across as a surprise when the young, impressionable Naina loses her heart to the handsome, rakish Bunny – the proverbial ‘bad-boy’ with a heart of gold. But circumstances soon pull the friends apart as Bunny goes off abroad in pursuit of his career and his dreams and Naina’s love remains unrequited and unsaid.

Eight years later, the four friends reunite at Udaipur for Aditi’s big, fat Indian wedding. Naina is a busy doctor, Bunny has a successful career in international media and reporting, Avi has become an alcoholic gambler and the flighty, bubbly Aditi is about to settle into steady matrimony with a staid, boring engineer Taran (Kunal Roy Kapur). Bunny discovers his love for Naina this time, but is on the verge of accepting the dream assignment of his career that would have him travelling to exciting places around the world to host his own show. Will he chose to stay back with the girl of his dreams who understands him like no one ever could or leave again in search of excitement and adventure?

Ayan Mukherjee’s second outing as a director does not have the crispiness of ‘Wake Up Sid’. While the first half was awesome, fun and had me eagerly waiting for more, the second half dragged at many places and could have been done better. I could actually feel the audience getting restless in the second half as the characters dragged on their dilemmas and confusion. At 159 minutes, the movie is slightly long.

Deepika and Ranbir in Pritam’s peppy ‘Badtameez Dil’!

But that said, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ comes across as a light-hearted, breezy and welcome change from the dark comedy and senseless action movies that are the ‘in-thing’ in Bollywood now. The first major Bollywood movie after the IPL is obviously going to set the box-office ringing.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Deepika looks absolutely glamorous and sets the screen on fire during the second half with her saris and lehengas, Ranbir is in his element as the dashing, ambitious youngster who has learnt to fight for his dreams, Kalki is delightful as the bubbly, vivacious girl who had a secret crush on her best friend and Aditya does what he does best – play the role of the broken, depressed alcoholic yet again. Kunal Roy Kapur and Evelyn Sharma were hilarious in the comedy scenes.

Farooq Sheikh puts in a cameo as Ranbir’s father and proves why he is still considered one of the best actors in Bollywood. A couple of songs, including Madhuri’s item song, were rather unnecessary according to me. But watch them especially for Ranbir’s dance moves. Can that boy dance and how!

My take would be, watch the movie once with your friends. Get in touch with your ‘deewani jawaani’ all over again! 😉
