Every year we get to hear about movies that kill it at the box office, but we all know that such movies are not always rich in storyline. And among these box office hits, several low budget films get lost because they don’t get the media attention they so deserve. We were on a lookout for awesome films that were overlooked last year and we found 6 brilliant flicks that you should definitely add to your watch list. Check out the list below and pick out your next film for movie night.
Starring Radhika Apte, Phobia has proved to be one of the greatest Indian psychological thriller films. The film tells a story of a girl who deals with severe agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder. Directed by Pavan Kirpalani, the film received appreciation from critics and other celebs, however, the movie failed to make its mark on the box office. Nonetheless, the creators of the film were pleased with the response and have decided to release a sequel.
2. Island City
Island City stars one of the finest Indian actors, Vinay Pathak along with Tannishta Chatterjee, Amruta Subhash, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Samir Kochhar, Ashwin Mushran, and Uttara Baokar. The comedy-drama film reflects three different stories loosely related to each other and it’s definitely one of the best but underrated flicks that came out last year.
An Indian drama produced by Ajay Devgan, Parched is a movie that was rated too low by the media and audience. It received 94% on Rotten Tomatoes but didn’t quite get the appreciation it deserved in India. The film focuses on the lives of four women from a desert village in Rajasthan and the obstacles they go through.
Aligarh stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role who plays a college professor. The film is a real story based on Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras’s life who was ridiculed and fired for being a homosexual. The movie didn’t receive a lot of media attention but it did receive a standing ovation at the 20th Busan International Film Festival. Bajpayee’s incredible performance is worth a watch in this flick.
5. Moh Maya Money
Moh Maya Money is a crime thriller starring Ranvir Shorey and Neha Dhupia that tells the story of a married couple and their greed for money. The middle-class couple dives too deep into cheating for money and as a result, the two end up in unexpected situations.
Waiting is a comedy drama starring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin. The movie is about two people whose partners are sick. They befriend each other in the hospital while nursing their spouses. The film received positive response worldwide but didn’t get the coverage it deserved in India.
