2015 was a good year for Bollywood with big actors making big moolah at the box office. We had the patriotic ‘Bhai’ Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Big B’s Piku, Aamir Khan’s PK, SRK’s Dilwale, and the list goes on.However, there were a lot of movies which didn’t make as much money but garnered rave reviews and their brilliance stuck out from the ocean of mediocrity.

We have put together a list of 5 Hindi movies of 2015 which went under the radar, and are a must watch for any movie’s fan. Here is the list.

5. Angry Indian Goddesses

A fun and intelligent movie about a bunch of female friends who all have some hidden secrets which come out one by one after a friend announces that she’s getting married. Starring a new cast featuring Sandhya Mridul , Tannishtha Chatterjee , Sarah-Jane Dias , Anushka Manchanda and Directed by Pal Nalin.

4. Manjhi – The Mountain Man

Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays the real life ‘Dashrath Manjhi’ in this bio-pic. Dashrath Manjhi is called the ‘Mountain Man’ because he carved a path in a mountain using a chisel and a hammer so that people of his village will not need to climb the mountain.

3. Umrika

Winner of the coveted World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, the movie stars Prateik Babbar, Suraj Sharma of Life of Pi and Tony Revolori of The Grand Budapest Hotel. The movie is about a man searching for his brother among lies and secrets within his own family. BTW: Umrika = ‘America’ in Indian accent.

2. Titli

It comes from the same person who co-wrote LSD (Love, Sex aur Dhokha) with Dibakar Banerjee and it’s in  a similar vein of dark comedy where violence is bubbling right under the daily life struggles and societal pressures of the characters portrayed – occasionally coming out. Brilliantly written and horrifying – the movie is a must watch. Starring Ranvir Shorey.

1. Masaan (Fly Away Solo)

An Indi-French joint production, the movie is about 2 people in two different stories and how the two stories come together. One story is about police harassment and blackmail of the main character Devi, after a police officer records her in a sex act. The other story is about low-caste boy names Deepak who’s wants to move away from his family business of corpse cremation and do something more respectful. If this summary itself does not convince you to watch the movie, then have a look at the trailer below.
