Summer Beauty: Natural Acne Remedies
One. Two. Three. Fou – nevermind!
Let’s face it: acnes are horrible. And now that it’s summer, it’s far worse. The scorching heat together with Hong Kong’s awful humidity result in intense perspiration and eventually, a breakout. Acnes get us to do bizarre things – like applying toothpaste on our foreheads and trying on various face masks that make us look like a character out of the Simpsons, or worse, Shrek himself. Despite everything we do, the acnes somehow manage to stay right where they were. Fret not! There are various Indian remedies that prove effective when treating pimples. Below are a few natural acne remedies you can easily whip up at home.
Turmeric works wonders! It’s a great antioxidant and thus, effective in relieving inflammation. Simply mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a few drops of honey in 2 teaspoons of yoghurt and apply the mask on your face or on affected areas. Leave it for a good 30 minutes before rinsing it off in lukewarm water.
Sandalwood too has great medicinal benefits; one being anti-bacterial. Not only does it help with acne, it also clears out spots and blemishes, and gives your skin a flawless finish. Mix a few drops of rose water in sandalwood until it reaches a paste-like consistency. Then apply the mixture on your face and let it rest for 20 minutes or so. Within a week, you should be able to notice your skin clearing up.
Although not exclusively Indian, garlic contains allicin, a natural antibiotic, that can eradicate pimples by killing off bacteria. To get this natural antibiotic to work, crush 2 cloves of garlic and add a little bit of yoghurt to make a smooth paste. Apply this mixture on the affected area(s) a few times a week for best results.
Menthol is a great skin care product and acne remover; thanks to its naturally occurring antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. To prepare a menthol mask, blend a few mint leaves until they are pureed thoroughly. If your skin is sensitive, it’s best to add some yoghurt into the mixture. Next, use a clean Q-tip to dab the puree onto your pimple(s) and leave them on for half an hour.
Fenugreek (also known as methi) is another spice that has great skin benefits. For pimple treatment, soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight, blend the seeds to make a thick paste and for the final touch, add 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Apply the mask on your face for half an hour (and apply extra of infected areas) before washing it off in lukewarm water.
Last but not least, lemons help with acne by reducing oil secretion and by killing bacteria. Before hitting the sack, be sure to apply lemon juice on pimples and scars and leave it overnight for your skin to absorb. Repeat this twice or thrice a week for best results.
